Balayage After Care

You have just walked out of the salon with gorgeous balayage — now how do you keep it looking fresh? Balayage is one of the lowest-maintenance colour services, but it still needs care. Here is how to protect your investment and keep your colour vibrant for as long as possible.

Use sulphate-free shampoo

Sulphates strip colour faster than anything else. Switch to a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner — this single change can extend the life of your balayage by weeks. At Bigoudee, we recommend Kevin Murphy products for colour-treated hair.

Wash less frequently

Every wash fades your colour slightly. Try to extend the time between washes — aim for every 2 to 3 days if possible. Dry shampoo is your friend on the in-between days.

Use cool or lukewarm water

Hot water opens the hair cuticle and allows colour molecules to escape. Rinse your hair with cool or lukewarm water to seal the cuticle and lock in your colour.

Apply a weekly hair mask

Colour-treated hair needs extra moisture. A weekly deep conditioning mask keeps your hair soft, shiny, and healthy — and healthy hair holds colour better.

Protect from heat

Heat styling can fade and damage coloured hair. Always use a heat protectant before blow-drying, straightening, or curling. Our Bigoudee Power-Up Heat Protector is formulated specifically for colour-treated hair.

Avoid chlorine and salt water

Swimming pools and the ocean can both affect your colour. Wet your hair with fresh water before swimming, and rinse thoroughly after. Consider wearing a swim cap for extended pool sessions.

Book a toner refresh

Toners fade over 6 to 8 weeks. A quick toner appointment between full balayage sessions keeps your colour tone looking fresh and prevents brassiness. At Bigoudee, toner refreshes start from $56.

When to rebook your balayage

Most balayage clients come back every 12 to 16 weeks, depending on how much contrast they want. Because balayage grows out naturally, you have more flexibility than with traditional highlights. Your stylist will recommend the ideal timing at your appointment.
