It is one of the most common questions we hear at Bigoudee Coiffure: how often should I actually be getting a haircut? The honest answer is — it depends. But most people are waiting longer than they should.
Here is a simple, practical guide from our Mount Lawley stylists to help you figure out the right schedule for your hair type, length, and goals.
Why Regular Haircuts Matter
Haircuts are not just about length. They are about shape, health, and condition. Over time, the ends of your hair naturally weaken, fray, and split. If you leave split ends too long, they travel up the hair shaft — causing breakage that is much harder to repair.
Regular trims keep your hair strong, your shape fresh, and your colour looking vibrant. They are one of the most important investments you can make in your hair.
Every 4–6 Weeks: Short Hair
If you have a short haircut — a pixie, a bob, a fade, or any style that sits above the shoulders — you will need to come in every 4 to 6 weeks to maintain the shape. Short styles lose their structure quickly as hair grows, and the difference between a fresh cut and a grown-out one is very visible.
Every 6–8 Weeks: Medium-Length Hair
For medium-length styles — collarbone to shoulder length — every 6 to 8 weeks is the sweet spot. This frequency maintains your shape and prevents split ends from becoming a problem, without cutting off the length you are trying to grow.
Every 8–12 Weeks: Long Hair
If you are growing your hair long, you can stretch your visits to every 8 to 12 weeks. The priority is keeping the ends healthy — a small trim of even just 1 to 2 centimetres every few months makes a significant difference. Long hair that is never trimmed tends to look thin and wispy at the ends, even if it is technically the length you want.
What About Colour-Treated Hair?
If your hair is coloured — bleached, highlighted, or balayaged — more frequent trims are recommended. Chemically treated hair is more prone to dryness and breakage, and trimming regularly removes the most damaged ends before they split further. We generally recommend colour clients come in every 6 to 8 weeks regardless of length.
Signs You Have Waited Too Long
Not sure if it is time? Look out for these signs: your ends feel dry and rough even after conditioning, you are seeing visible split ends, your style has lost its shape, your colour looks flat or uneven, or your hair is tangling more than usual. These are all signals that a cut is overdue.
